A Washington State native, Ian attended the University of Washington graduating from the UW School of Business with departmental honors in 2003. He received his Juris Doctorate from New York University (NYU) School of Law in 2007.
While in New York City for law school, Ian interned at Brooklyn Legal Services in East Brooklyn where he defended victims of predatory lending practices by taking part in the civil prosecution of members of elaborate real estate fraud schemes. The perpetrators of these schemes relied on collusion between th home seller and lender to inflate first time, minority home buyers’ qualifications for mortgages which they could not afford. The lender then ‘bundled’ its bad mortgages and resold the debt, knowing full well that borrowers would default when the adjustable interest rate increased on the inflated mortgages. It was during this period that Ian discovered his passion for using knowledge of legal and financial transactions to defend the rights of people facing foreclosure.
Before joining Nagler & Malaier, Ian also served as a law clerk to several trial judges in Kitsap County Superior Court. In addition to providing him with an insider’s perspective on the workings of the Washington State court system, the clerkship reaffirmed Ian’s conviction that consumers need and deserve a strong advocate in order to vindicate their rights.
Ian is admitted to practice law in all Washington State Courts and the U.S. District Courts for the Western District and Eastern District of Washington, which incorporate the Bankruptcy Courts. He is also a member of the American Bar Association, the King County Bar Association, and the Young Lawyers Division of the Washington State Bar Association.
